Rebuild jobs generally follow the steps outlined below:

The first four steps are needed to discover what will be required. For example, if the block is cracked it might be repairable. Otherwise a suitable replacement core must be obtained.

  1. Dis-assembly  (engines, heads or blocks).
  2. Cleaning: Remove oil, gunk and other residue from parts using a rotary wash system.
  3. Magnaflux: Induce a magnetic field and use magnetic particles to make defects, such as cracks in heads or blocks visible before committing them to machine work. Some defects can be repaired instead of rejecting the part.
  4. Check wear surfaces for size and determine machining requirements.
  5. Consult with the customer to establish how to proceed.
  6. Order any new parts required.
  7. Machine work – surfacing, boring, grinding, etc. – performed as needed.
  8. Assembly and adjustment (valve train).
